Short answer: This black Audi Q5 Sportback had swirl marks and light scratches across the paint. We removed them with a two-step paint correction, then sealed the corrected finish with our Ceramic Pro Advanced Coat (5-year warranty), which starts at $1,299 for a mid-size SUV. Coating alone would have locked the swirls in; correction is what takes them out.

Swirl marks are the fine circular scratches you see around every light source on dark paint. On a black Audi they show up the first time the car sits in the sun. This Q5 Sportback came to us for ceramic coating, but the paint needed to be fixed first: swirls and light scratches had to come out before anything could be sealed in.
What We Did on This Audi Q5 Sportback
- Wash and decontamination: hand wash, clay bar and iron remover so the polisher only touches clean paint.
- Two-step paint correction: a cutting step to remove the swirls and scratches, then a polishing step to bring back clarity.
- Ceramic Pro Advanced Coat: one layer of Ceramic Pro 9H and one layer of Top Coat, with a 5-year warranty.
- Ceramic Pro Glass on the windshield, included with every package.
Swirl Marks vs Scratches: What Correction Can Remove
Paint correction works by leveling a very thin layer of the clear coat until the defect is gone. That means it removes damage that sits in the clear coat:
- Swirl marks from washing and drying. These are shallow and come out completely.
- Light scratches from brushes, bags, keys brushed against the door, or wiping dust off dry paint.
- Haze and water spot etching that a wash can’t remove.
What it can’t safely remove is a scratch that goes through the clear coat into the color. A quick check: if a scratch catches your fingernail, it is often deeper than polishing should go. We look at every scratch under shop lights before we promise it will disappear.
Where the Swirls Came From
Almost every swirl mark is a wash mark. The usual causes are automatic brush washes, a dirty wash mitt, a dry towel dragged across dusty paint, and quick dealership washes. Black paint doesn’t get more swirls than other colors; it just shows every one of them.
The Detail Work: Tight Areas and Body Lines
Large, flat panels like the doors and hood are corrected with a full-size machine polisher. The hard part of an Audi is everything around them: the grille surround, the sharp bumper edges, the creases in the hood and the trim next to the chrome. A big pad can’t reach those areas without burning an edge, so they are done with a small polisher and small pads, one section at a time.
The white residue is the cutting compound doing its job. Trim and edges are taped so the polisher never touches plastic or chrome. Then the second step refines the same areas until the haze from cutting is gone. The two steps are explained in more detail in our black Mustang GT paint correction write-up.
Sealing It: The Advanced Coat
Once the paint was corrected, it was wiped clean of polishing oils and the Advanced Coat went on: Ceramic Pro 9H as the hard base layer, Top Coat on top for slickness and water behavior, and Ceramic Pro Glass on the windshield.
The coating doesn’t make the paint scratch-proof, but it does make the car much easier to wash. Dirt releases with less rubbing, and less rubbing is exactly what keeps new swirls from forming. You can see the same water behavior on this ceramic coated Toyota RAV4.

Ceramic Coating Cost for an Audi Q5 in Lewisville
For a mid-size SUV like the Q5 Sportback, our Ceramic Pro packages are $899 for the Essential Coat (2-year warranty), $1,299 for the Advanced Coat (5-year warranty) and $1,899 for the Ultimate Coat (lifetime warranty). Every package includes decontamination and a Stage 1 polish. A full two-step correction like this one is extra work, so we price it after we inspect the paint.
If rock chips worry you more than swirls, add paint protection film on the front first; we coated over the film on this Rivian R1S. Still deciding? Read is ceramic coating worth it in Lewisville.

Keeping the Swirls From Coming Back
- Never use a brush car wash. It puts swirls back faster than anything else.
- Rinse before you touch the paint, so grit comes off before a mitt goes on.
- Use clean microfiber for drying, never a dirty towel or a dry wipe.
More finished cars are in our portfolio, including a GMC Sierra Denali we coated without needing a full correction.

FAQ
Can swirl marks be removed permanently?
Yes. Paint correction removes swirl marks from the clear coat, so they are gone, not hidden. New swirls only come back from new washing damage, which a ceramic coating helps reduce.
Can paint correction remove all scratches?
It removes swirls and scratches that sit in the clear coat. Scratches deep enough to reach the color, often the ones that catch a fingernail, can be improved but not always removed. We check before we quote.
Does ceramic coating prevent swirl marks?
It reduces them. A coated surface is slicker and releases dirt more easily, so you rub the paint less when you wash it. It doesn’t make paint scratch-proof.
How much does ceramic coating cost for an Audi Q5?
At our shop, mid-size SUV pricing is $899 (Essential Coat), $1,299 (Advanced Coat) or $1,899 (Ultimate Coat). Paint correction beyond the included Stage 1 polish is quoted after inspection.
Why do black cars show swirl marks so much?
Black paint reflects light like a mirror, so every fine scratch scatters light and shows up as a circle around the sun or a lamp. The swirls are there on lighter colors too; they’re just harder to see.
