Short answer: Yes, you can put ceramic coating over PPF, and on this Rivian R1S we did exactly that. The front end got full front Autobahn paint protection film (PPF), then the whole SUV got ceramic coating, including a layer on top of the film. We also ceramic coated the dashboard and installed ceramic window tint. The film stops rock chips; the coating keeps the film and the paint slick, glossy and easy to wash.

This Rivian R1S came to Kingdom Window Tint, and the owner wanted it protected in layers, not just one product. So we stacked four services: full front PPF, full-car ceramic coating with the coating carried over the film, an interior ceramic coating on the dashboard, and ceramic window tint.
The question we get most about a build like this is whether ceramic coating over PPF is worth doing, or whether the film is enough on its own. Here is what each layer does, the order we put them on, and what the combination will and won’t protect against.
Can You Put Ceramic Coating Over PPF?
Yes. Ceramic coating bonds to the top surface of paint protection film the same way it bonds to clear coat, so the coated film picks up the same slickness, gloss and water behavior as the rest of the car. The PPF stays underneath as the impact layer, and the coating becomes the outer layer that dirt, bugs and water actually touch.
The order matters: PPF goes on first, then the coating. If you coat the paint first, the film’s adhesive has to stick to a slick coated surface, which is the opposite of what you want.
Every Layer on This Rivian R1S
| Layer | Where it went | What it does | What it doesn’t do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full front Autobahn PPF | Front bumper, full hood, full front fenders, mirror caps, headlights | Absorbs rock chips and road debris on the front end | Repel water and dirt as well as a coated surface |
| Ceramic coating | All painted panels, plus over the PPF | Gloss, slickness, easier washing, resistance to chemical staining | Stop rock chips |
| Interior ceramic coating | Dashboard | Helps the dash resist staining and wipe clean | Block heat coming through the glass |
| Ceramic window tint | Windows | Cuts heat and UV coming into the cabin | Protect the paint |
Each layer covers a gap the others leave open. That is the whole reason to combine them instead of picking one.
Why Put Ceramic Coating on Top of PPF?
PPF is excellent at taking hits, but uncoated film is not especially slick. Bug splatter, road film and hard-water spots stick to it, and on a front end as upright as the R1S’s, the bumper and light bar catch a lot of bugs on I-35E and SH-121.
Ceramic coating over the PPF fixes that in three ways:
- Contamination releases faster. Bugs and road grime come off the coated film with a rinse and a light wash instead of scrubbing.
- The film resists staining. The coating sits between the film and whatever lands on it, so the film itself sees less of it.
- The whole car behaves the same. Without coating on the film, the front end and the rest of the car wash, bead and shine differently. Coating everything makes the finish match from bumper to tailgate.
In the clip above, the water is running over the hood, which is covered in PPF with ceramic coating on top. It moves off the surface instead of sitting flat and spreading, which is what you want after every rain and every wash.
PPF First, Then Ceramic Coating: How We Did It
Most of a ceramic coating job is preparation. A coating seals in whatever is underneath it, so the surface has to be clean and refined before anything goes on. This is the order the R1S went through at our shop:
- Hand wash and decontamination with clay bar and iron remover to pull bonded contamination out of the paint.
- Digital paint inspection and Stage 1 polish to refine the finish before it gets sealed under film and coating.
- Full front Autobahn PPF install on the bumper, hood, front fenders, mirror caps and headlights.
- Panel prep and trim masking so the coating bonds to clean paint and clean film.
- Ceramic coating on every painted panel and over the PPF, plus a glass coating on the windshield.
- Interior ceramic coating on the dashboard.
- Ceramic window tint on the windows.
Everything happens indoors at our shop on SH-121. We don’t do mobile service, because dust or pollen that lands on fresh coating in a driveway gets locked in.

Ceramic Coating the Dashboard and Tinting the Glass
The inside of a car takes its own beating in North Texas. The dashboard sits right under the windshield in direct sun, and it collects dust, fingerprints and the occasional spill. An interior ceramic coating on the dash helps it resist staining and makes it easier to wipe clean without harsh cleaners.
The coating protects the dashboard’s surface, but it doesn’t stop heat or UV coming through the glass. That is the tint’s job. Ceramic window tint blocks UV and rejects heat without metal in the film, so it won’t interfere with phone, GPS or the R1S’s connected features. If you want to compare films, our guide to heat rejection and TSER explains the numbers, and our EV window tint guide covers what matters on electric vehicles.

PPF or Ceramic Coating: Do You Need Both?
Not every car needs both. It comes down to what you are protecting against:
- Rock chips and scratches: you need PPF. Ceramic coating is too thin to absorb an impact. Our breakdown of whether PPF is worth it in Lewisville goes deeper.
- Gloss, easier washing and staining: ceramic coating does this on its own. See is ceramic coating worth it for the full picture.
- Both: PPF on the front end where impacts happen, ceramic coating over the film and everywhere else. That is what this R1S got.

Ceramic Coating Prices in Lewisville
Ceramic coating at our shop starts at $899 for a mid-size SUV on the Essential Coat (2-year warranty), $1,299 on the Advanced Coat (5-year warranty) and $1,899 on the Ultimate Coat (lifetime warranty). Car and oversize truck prices, and what each package includes, are on our ceramic coating page.
PPF is priced by coverage and vehicle, so we quote it per car. Send us your vehicle and we’ll price PPF, coating and tint together.
How to Care for Ceramic Coating Over PPF
- Hand wash with a pH-neutral soap. Strong alkaline cleaners wear coating down faster, on film and on paint.
- Keep the pressure washer back from film edges. Spraying straight at an edge up close can lift it.
- Skip brush-type car washes. They put swirls in coated paint and scuff the film.
- Get bugs and bird droppings off quickly. The coating buys you time, but summer heat still bakes them on.
- Dry the car instead of letting it air dry. North Texas tap water is mineral-heavy and leaves spots on any surface.
FAQ
Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes. Ceramic coating bonds to the surface of paint protection film just like it bonds to paint. The film handles rock chips, and the coating adds slickness, gloss and stain resistance on top of it.
Should PPF or ceramic coating go on first?
PPF goes on first. The film needs a clean, uncoated surface to stick to, and the ceramic coating goes over everything once the film is installed.
Do I need ceramic coating if I already have PPF?
You don’t need it, but it helps. Uncoated film holds onto bugs, road film and water spots more than coated film does. Coating over the PPF makes it easier to wash and keeps the whole car’s finish consistent.
Does ceramic coating protect against rock chips?
No. Ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that improves gloss and makes cleaning easier, but it does not absorb impacts. For rock-chip protection, you need paint protection film on the high-impact areas.
Can you ceramic coat a car’s dashboard?
Yes. We offer interior ceramic coatings, and on this Rivian R1S we coated the dashboard so it resists staining and wipes clean more easily.
Is PPF covered by a warranty?
Yes. Paint protection film is covered by the film manufacturer’s warranty. The PPF on this Rivian R1S is Autobahn, so it carries Autobahn’s warranty. Ceramic coating warranties depend on the package: 2 years for the Essential Coat, 5 years for the Advanced Coat and lifetime for the Ultimate Coat.
